2012 Applicants
Re: 2012 Applicants
I just heard from my Air Force POC that they should receive the list of the students being picked up this year any day now. They were also aware of the delay in the notification letters. So I'm thinking the SFs will be notified by the end of the week or early next week and the award notifications will go out late next week or sometime the week after.

I feel like most people are in the physics and engineering realm, is that true?
Re: 2012 Applicants
The best bet is probably to accept any offered outside funding, and then if you get the SMART fellowship just tell the other sources of funding that you don't need their money any more. With a few exceptions (TA commitments are probably a big one) nobody will be offended if you tell them they don't have to pay you anymore.
Chiming in: Physics Ph.D., actually within two years of graduation and mainly interested in SMART as a good source of a post-graduation jobs/experience.

Re: 2012 Applicants
I'm in the same boat. I already registered for my classes, but if I get awarded the scholarship, I will have to change everything. (Which would be good to know BEFORE summer classes start...)WaitingIsFun wrote:This is my biggest gripe. I soon will have to make an enrollment decision and making that decision without knowing if I will or will not be receiving the SMART scholarship is going to be difficult. I don't mind waiting but I believe that pushing the announcement date past or even close to the 15th is a disservice to applicants.thatguy wrote:well at least most schools don't want to hear back by April 15th....oh wait.

Re: 2012 Applicants
I thought I would just share my story of when I got the e-mail (for fun).
I was sitting at work, just thought I would check my text messages. All of a sudden got an e-mail from ASS SMART. I literally was like "oh my god...". I still had 45 minutes left of work. It was nerve racking. Get in my car, check my e-mail, and find out that it's been delayed.
FML. More waiting.

Ending my 4th year as a PhD student in Genetics... I applied for 1 year of funding.polling wrote:Who here in this forum is a M.S or Ph.D Student? And who is soon to be?

MSCS - Information Security here as well.areasofstudy wrote:what is everyone's area of student?

Re: 2012 Applicants
Computer engineering. BS. I'm a sophomore applying for a three year scholarship. I was recommended, but three years is a lot of funding money.

Same here, especially out of state.guest17 wrote:Computer engineering. BS. I'm a sophomore applying for a three year scholarship. I was recommended, but three years is a lot of funding money.

Re: 2012 Applicants
My own morbid curiousity but...
Few numerically is typically == 3
3 weeks == 21 days
21 days == 504 hours
504 hours == 30,240 minutes
30,240 minutes == 1,814,400 seconds
During that time you will blink roughly 241,920 times ##Assuming you sleep 8 hours a day and blink once every 5 sec
The average US citizen will consume 47,197 calories
You could watch every Star Wars movie 37 times and still get 12 hours of sleep
OR you could just hit F5 until your finger falls off

Re: 2012 Applicants
Second year physics Ph.D., studying biophysics, namely statistically analyzing patterns and simulating protein dynamics. I asked for three years and was recommended by my top choice SF, which is local to me so mo excess summer funding, but they don't know for certain that I'll be selected.
Re: 2012 Applicants
Wow.
Compared to you guys I suck! I'm finishing my BS in Information Systems, minoring in mathematics. Put down anticipation of MS for Information Systems, but did not ask for funding for the masters. So the only funding I asked for was summer 2012/fall 2012.
I feel like an idiot next to the Ph.D. students. :)

Accelerated BS/MS Aerospace Engineering. Applying for 2 years of support.
Re: 2012 Applicants
I requested funding for my last year and a half pursuing a my BS degree.
Majoring in CS with focus in security.
Minoring in chewing my fingernails down to the knuckle waiting for this frikin email...
Seriously whoever started this forum is a gentleman and a scholar--having a sense of community in this situation is a relief...it would suck to wait and wonder alone. But I swear I hate you for all the grey hairs I have grown refreshing this damn thread...

"Responding to the question about MS or PhD"
I'm a 3rd year PhD student in Neuroscience with a background in Physics studying intelligent command and control systems modeled from the mammalian nervous system.
Would you all say that most applicants are graduate students?
Thanks

Re: 2012 Applicants
Doesn't matter. They go down the list and put a check by each student til they're out of money. It would only affect you if you are the last on the list. If you change after the scholarship is awarded though, then its possible you wouldn't be offered a new award. It would depend how much leftover money they have (they allocate a certain amount for awar adjustments)guest17 wrote:Computer engineering. BS. I'm a sophomore applying for a three year scholarship. I can't tell if that's a good thing or a bad thing lol. How do you know this though? I'm clueless and just have the impression that the DoD would rather give a one year award than a three year award so I'm hoping not.
Re: 2012 Applicants
I am a sophomore Biochemistry major with Mathematics minor. Any other chemistry/biology people?
Re: 2012 Applicants
Just because we've got some down time...
I'm a sophomore in biomedical engineering w/a spanish minor, my depth area is going to be biomechanics. Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew of an undergraduate BME major being accepted in the past? According to this report (http://www.me.vt.edu/academic_programs/ ... 0AWARD.pdf) there have only been 7 undergrad bioscience awards ever.
Just wondering if anyone had anymore info or if there were others in the same boat as me. I had the aeromedical lab in Fort Rucker and the 711th human performance wing at Wright-Patterson as my top choices.
