I am planning on applying this fall. I've read through the forums and the website. I was wondering if you are to move to where your sponsoring facility is or if you only go there for the summer internships and to work post-graduation. I currently live near Ft. Bragg, NC and there aren't any sponsoring facilities here.
Also, if anyone has gone through this program as an applied mathematician I'd appreciate it if you'd contact me.

You have to complete your degree at the university you applied under, so unless you were already moving to your school you stay put. If the SF is more than so far (150 mi or something similar) from your permanent address (not your school, where you “live” on your breaks, they pay for transportation (up to their cost of airfare), the monthly stipend, and the added weekly stipend. Towards the end of phase I, you have to get an official offer letter from your SF. While you’re trying to “negotiate” your salary, you can press for relocation expenses. I think it’s pretty common they pay it, but don’t quote me on it. You SHOULD NOT move until you have an official offer letter and start date. You could end up waiting on your SF to give you the job while you’re trying to pay bills.

Well, some scholars have had their relocation expenses covered by their SF. However, it is definitely the exception, and not the rule. In fact, the SMART documentation will tell you to plan on paying your own relocation, as many SFs opt to not pay. You HAVE to work for them, why would they want to give you money to get there?
