Finalists

Post by dan »

Post here if you've heard back yet, so the rest of us know when we should be expecting word back from SMART. Let us know if you're a finalist.

And congrats to those who will be chosen :)

By the way, I haven't gotten word back yet. Still waiting for the SF-87.

i think the main site says finalists will be contacted via email in the contact info that you fill out

received email

Post by bravefencer »

just recieved this:
Congratulations, this email is to inform you that you have been selected as a Semi-Finalist for an award under the SMART Program. As in past years, there are many more Semi-Finalists than possible award slots and not all Semi-Finalists will receive awards. This year over 3,300 applications were received, of those, 1,300 Semi-Finalists have been named. From this group of Semi-Finalists, approximately 250-300 awards will be made on or about March 31, 2010, thus this email is not to be construed as a promise of an award.

Applications for all Semi-Finalists have been forwarded to participating Department of Defense (DoD) Services and Agencies for review. During this process you may be contacted by one or more DoD representatives from these agencies and may be asked to participate in an interview with the DoD facility they represent. On or about March 15, 2010, these organizations will submit to the SMART Program Office (SPO) a list of candidates they recommend for an award and post-graduation and internship placement with their facility. This year the SPO expects to receive a list of 500-600 recommended candidates. From this list, the SPO will select 250-300 for an award.

Please be advised, ONLY WRITTEN AWARD NOTIFICATIONS SENT BY ASEE ARE CONSIDRED LEGALLY BINDING AWARDS. Candidates can be denied awards at any time prior to receiving an official award notification sent by ASEE. No other implied and/or explicit promise of an award made by any individual or group other than ASEE is a binding award offer and will NOT be honored by the SPO.

I just got that e-mail as well. Are semi-finalists as high as they've gotten so far? Have any finalists been chosen, or is that what they're saying will be announced March 31st?

Just got an e-mail saying I didn't even make it as a semi-finalist. Not really sure how, my academics were pretty far above the minimum requirements. Needless to say, good luck to all of those who were named semi-finalists.

i think this is just like a first cut, then by march 15, there will be a second cut of about 500-600 who are sent to the Dod faculty and then by march 31 they'll have the finalists?

Not quite. All of the semi finalist applications are being sent to the various DoD labs. The program managers will pick out who they want, which will be about 500 to 600, and and send their recommendations back to ASEE. Then they'll decide the 250-300 people who actually get awarded. I doubt there will be anymore announced cuts after this. The next announcement will probably be the awardees.

I'm a semifinalist. I'm pretty excited, I've got about 4 years until I plan to get my PhD, and this is the career path I want to take anyway. If I get this, the rest of my academic career will be much less stressful.

Yeah, I'm not a Semi-Finalist either. I guess I'll just apply next year. Congrats to all the Semi-Finalists.

WOOT!! I made the first cut. I am kinda shocked to be honest. After seeing so many posts from people who have researching experience I thought that I was not going to make the first round. I am only currently a freshman, granted I have a 4.0 and work a full time job, and scored a 26 on the ACT. I don't know how far just academics will get me on the next round. And the main place I would like to work is Hunstville, AL and they just got hit with bad news since Obama is planning to cut the Constellation Program. Well fingers crossed! I wonder how intense the interviews will be from the DoD facilities. I figure they are going to be over the phone but I am like never home due to work and school. Maybe they will schedule a certain time. Good luck to all the semi-finalist.

Thanks Bill, however if I receive the award this year I would not be able to work as an intern this summer due to the fact that I will need to take summer classes to get myself prepared to transfer to Auburn University this fall.
I appreciate the heads up and hopefully I will work there next summer as a SMART Scholarship intern.
