2012 Applicants
Re: 2012 Applicants
For anyone interested in keeping track, we are now two weeks past the "a few weeks" email notice, and three and a half weeks past the original notification date (March 31).
3.5 weeks = 25 days
Approximate average American lifespan = 28470 days
You've spent 0.09% of your life waiting for the magical ASEE email.

Re: 2012 Applicants
And chances are it's gonna be at least another 5 days. When I asked my SF about a possible time frame, their response was along the lines of 'probably not this week, but soon'.gatsby wrote:For anyone interested in keeping track, we are now two weeks past the "a few weeks" email notice, and three and a half weeks past the original notification date (March 31).

Re: 2012 Applicants
I've been reject, unofficially. I was a retention candidate and found out by contacting my SMART POC at our location. Good luck, all!
Re: 2012 Applicants
Another approach would be to request LWOP (Leave With Out Pay) for one year to pursue your studies. The governement will hold your position for one year. If you get the SMART, you can then return to the government payrol. If you do not get SMART you can continue your studies and know that you still have the government job waiting for you.Trying2Relax wrote:Thanks for the suggestion, and yes I have done that. They wouldn't tell me exactly where I fell on the priority list, but only that it was a priority they would normally expect to be funded. However they caveated that by saying SMART can rearrange the priority list at-will according to budget constraints. I realize that somewhat contradicts what others have said on this board, but that is what I was told. With everything that has went on who can say for certain how things will fall out?guest for today wrote:Have you spoken with the SMART coordinator/POC at your facility. He/she may be able to give you a better idea of where you are on their priority list.Trying2Relax wrote:Just on the off-chance that someone in a decision-making position ever reads this board (or more likely just to vent). One of my biggest fears was just realized. I was just offered one of the jobs I was looking into, but this job was always my plan B if I didn't get SMART. They've aggreed to hold it for now, but any day they might come back and demand I either accept or decline. As a retention candidate I can't just accept the new job and quit if I get selected for SMART. Grrrr.....Argh.....
Speak with your chain of command and let them know you would like to maintain your position in the government, but would like to take I year off via LWOP to pursue your studies. See how it goes. I've been on approved LWOP in the past and then returned back to the DoD after the LWOP period had expired...
Re: 2012 Applicants
How did your local SMART POC find out? Did they not end up submitting your name or did they hear something from the SPO?Guest wrote:I've been reject, unofficially. I was a retention candidate and found out by contacting my SMART POC at our location. Good luck, all!

Re: 2012 Applicants
There isn't a "200 award limit", it varies based on the budget and the specific awards given. Based on the budget the last few years, the number of awards has tended to fall between 190 and 200. You're bluffing
Re: 2012 Applicants
It's not a "bluff", it's NDSEG. Not the same thing as SMART. They're both run by the same DoD sub-agency (the National Defense Education Program), but they're different scholarships, they have different goals, different levels of funding and whatnot.
It's interesting to see the email because it gives us a data point that about NDEP that we didn't have before. Of course it doesn't get us notified any sooner, but it's something.

Re: 2012 Applicants
That was an email response I got from NDSEG today after asking when notifications would go out to everyone.

^^ Let's keep the posts SMART-related. I almost had a heart attack reading that email.04262012 wrote:I don't think that was a reference to SMART...

for some reason I don't think we'll be getting any further answers on this....Guestish wrote:How did your local SMART POC find out? Re: 2012 Applicants
I think its relevant. ASEE administers both NDSEG and SMART. Makes sense that they would both be finalized tomorrowORgirl wrote:^^ Let's keep the posts SMART-related. I almost had a heart attack reading that email.04262012 wrote:I don't think that was a reference to SMART...
Re: 2012 Applicants
I know, I tried to respond back quickly hoping this person would look at the posts a little longer, but I'm not surprised. If I find out I'm not getting the scholarship I'm not looking at this site again till next Fall when the 2013 call for applications come out.Guest wrote:for some reason I don't think we'll be getting any further answers on this....Guestish wrote:How did your local SMART POC find out? This follows the logic: If I drop of my prescription and photos at Walmart, they will be ready at the same time.
Re: 2012 Applicants
Hey guys,
So this is my first year applying and I'm a Chemistry and Q.Bio B.S. freshmen. I was informed that I made it to the next round, but was never contacted for an interview. Is this a safe bet to assume that means I didn't get the award?

Re: 2012 Applicants
If you had time to read back through this thread, and ones from other years, which would take a long time, you'd find the consensus is that not being contacted doesn't mean anything. In previous years some people who got interviews didn't get awards and some people who were never contacted got awards.rshea wrote:Hey guys,

So you get to remain in limbo with the rest of us :)

I figured it was somewhere in the thread, but there were too many pages to go through. Thanks for answering!!
Re: 2012 Applicants
Both award notification pages seem to be down, this is pretty promising for tomorrow!

Re: 2012 Applicants
So is this upcoming Monday the official end to the "few weeks"? Do you think we will get another update then? I would like to hear something at least, it has been a while. Even if they just tell us they are ironing out the details of the agreements. Or maybe give us a better idea of how many they will be accepting, or the funding situation, something, anything.
