SMART 2104 status?

Just had a message on my phone from the SMART program office NAVY liaison, so things must be progressing. Will update after I talk to him tomorrow.

So, I just got off the phone with the SMART program office (NAVY Liaison), and they are updating preferences based on what facilities you have had interviews with. He implied that facilities other than those that had called me had also recommended me, so for those out there that didn't get a phone interview, it is still possible that you were recommended for sponsorship!

Fingers crossed! It seems that a hefty number of people did receive phone interviews, at the very least, which can be alarming to those of us who received no contact. Still, "official" decisions are still on their way, right? No cause for alarm yet!

I'm just curious -- what if you got an offer from an SF you didn't like -- would you still take it? Would you be happy just to have any offer at all? The whole multi-year commitment thing is scaring me...

If you already have college paid for it's kind of up to you. The stipend isn't THAT much money to where it's very worth it. It basically comes down to your preference. If you have a good major and good GPA then you should be able to get a good job right out of college.

Don't take the money if you aren't excited about the prospect of working where you are selected. Having said that, you could limit your exposure by only taking the last year or two of your degree. I think the vast majority of the SMART scholars think the ROI was positive.

Only a small percentage have bailed out after graduation. That is a mistake. While folks haven't been asked to repay their SMART debt yet, but it's the federal government and while it turns slowly, it does turn.

Has anyone been awarded? I had a few interviews in April and was told that awards would be given out on May 23rd, so I'm wondering if anyone has received an award today

I haven't heard anything yet. It's still early in the day, and they've traditionally been weeks or even months late in the past. I keep seeing the 23rd mentioned, but I haven't seen anything official. Where did everyone hear that?

Braumeister, I was told the 23rd during one of my phone interviews. I have seen the date online a few times as well though.

Yes, it should be by email... at least it has been in the past, and I don't see why they would change it.

Just called SMART - (202)331-3544. They said DOD says the notifications will go out by the end of the month (May). So that gives them until COB Friday, 05/30. I'll believe it when I see it.
