AAAAAAAArrrrrrrggghhhh.
Well, at least I won't be sitting at my computer, twitching, waiting for an email any more.

My FP wrote back, no trollin:
Hi XXXXXX,
I'm hearing that the letters will go out next week. I'll check with the POC again to see if he knows more.

Re: 2012 Applicants
wouldn't it be funny that now we get this delay email, that we're going about our lives expecting to hear in a few weeks and then suddenly on friday we get notification of whether or not we got accepted :-P
Re: 2012 Applicants
Cool...so no one knows what's going on. This is fantastic.Guest wrote:My FP wrote back, no trollin:

Re: 2012 Applicants
Just got an update in my email:
ASEE has been notified by the Department of Defense that the 2012 SMART Scholarship award announcements have been delayed. Award notifications are now expected to be sent out at some point in the next few weeks. Once the Department of Defense provides another update this information will be provided to you. All applicants will be notified of their final award status. Thank you for your interest in the SMART Scholarship Program.

Re: 2012 Applicants
Just got the same email. Not a big fan of this nebulous "next few weeks" - are we talking mid-April or is this going to drag on past the end of the semester?
Still, at least it's something.

Re: 2012 Applicants
well at least most schools don't want to hear back by April 15th....oh wait.
Re: 2012 Applicants
To be honest, I'm glad they didn't post a tentative deadline. I'd rather hear a vague "next few weeks" and then be surprised one day by an email than be sitting at my computer for days after the deadline has passed. I'm curious, however, if anyone did NOT get this email?
Re: 2012 Applicants
where do we collect this money from?Still_Waiting wrote:I don't know, I'm thinking we'll hear back Monday, April 9th. I have friends that heard back early from their NSF proposals today, but I think the DOD will be on time if late with their estimate. The other DOD fellowship, the NDSEG, didn't announce until April 18th last year.
So, 2012_UMD, you wanna throw money down? My $50 says April 9th. But, let's hope you're right and we hear back sooner.
Re: 2012 Applicants
This is my biggest gripe. I soon will have to make an enrollment decision and making that decision without knowing if I will or will not be receiving the SMART scholarship is going to be difficult. I don't mind waiting but I believe that pushing the announcement date past or even close to the 15th is a disservice to applicants.thatguy wrote:well at least most schools don't want to hear back by April 15th....oh wait.

This is my gripe too, about study abroad. I have a seat saved, but I wasn't going to take it if I didn't get SMART because then I would need all my other scholarships to cover actual school. I really need to know ASAP or else I won't get to go, even if I get SMART, because I won't be able to get my visa in time.
sigh
Re: 2012 Applicants
My sentiments exactly, I imagine many of the graduate applicants are in a similar position, with TA/RA funding offers waiting for replies by April 15th. We have to turn down funding for a chance for full funding via SMART. This will be an interesting few days indeed.WaitingIsFun wrote:This is my biggest gripe. Re: 2012 Applicants
I went through that with a similar program called the Stokes scholarship with NSA. Applications due Dec 1, followed by a series of cuts, polygraphs, background checks, and the like. Their 'finalist' decisions were being sent out the last week of April and my college decision needed to be made by May 1. The 'finalists' weren't even the last cut. I committed to the more expensive school because I got pretty confident after I got the finalist email on April TWENTY-NINTH. Then, the emails started coming about budget cuts... I got my rejection email mid-July. I definitely don't regret going to the more expensive school cause it's my dream university. But now SMART has turned into my Stokes nightmare...WaitingIsFun wrote:This is my biggest gripe. Re: 2012 Applicants
Soon to be PhD, already accepted a school, and I had to accept their funding offer with it, but I assume that could be rectified if smart was an option...polling wrote:Who here in this forum is a M.S or Ph.D Student? And who is soon to be?
Re: 2012 Applicants
Guys I would think the smart thing to do if you had to make a decision would be to go ahead and accept any funding you can- then if you get accepted to SMART I'm sure no one will say sorry you have to keep taking their funding and can't stop your fellowship programs etc... and even if that were the case if you couldn't give back funding you took- how can SMART penalize you for taking funding before you knew for sure you were accepted by SMART. I'd keep all your door open and options on the table and say yes to everything then if you get accepted to smart that other fellowship can go to the colleges second choice etc.
