2020 Finalist Decisions

Post by Jakey »

Not trying anything funny. Just making a post for us to sound off on when/if we get news. Should be between today and April 10 (though most likely this Friday, April 3).

Remember, if you don’t get it, you’re not a failure. Your specific skill sets and experiences just weren’t needed this year, but they could be next year, so apply again! Or not. If the warnings of other recipients on recent posts are to be heeded, consider your rejection a bullet dodged and apply elsewhere.

Good luck to all! And stay safe amid this coronavirus pandemic.

Is everyone (winners and losers) notified at once?

You know what you did by posting this on April 1st.

Will they still notify you if you were not selected?

Do you think the timeline for facilities to choose their SMART scholars could be pushed due to the outbreak?

I’d like to open the betting pool for when we will be notified, my guess is Friday, April 10th at 10am

My guess is that there is a:
20% chance we get it sometime this evening
30% chance we get it April 10
20% chance we get it sometime from April 17-May 1
30% pushed back to late May, early June due to the coronavirus

In previous years, based on looking back through the forum, release dates were:

2019: Friday, April 5 at 9am CT
2018: Monday, April 9 at ~2pm CT
2017: Tuesday, May 9 (I think)

And from a post in 2017 (https://www.thesmartforum.org/viewtopic ... 8632#p8632)

2010 April 01
2011 April 01
2012 June 08
2013 July 02
2014 April 17 (Thursday)
2015 April 17 (Friday)
2016 April 07 (Thursday) ~3pm CT

So, it looks like awards can come out on a variety of days. And based on the times for 2018 and 2016, it looks like the release isn’t necessarily in the morning.

I did my best to look through the 2017 threads but I couldn’t pin down a single time. But, I know for a fact that 2017 was an oddball year. Someone I know who got accepted that year said SMART just kept pushing it back so I wouldn’t base anything off of 2017. Since many of us have been told that it will be in the first part of April this year, I’m pretty sure we will see something before the end of next week.

You're a saint. I did partial research on when it was released the last couple years, but nothing this extensive. Good list! I did see from 2017, I think they actually informed all applicants that the award notifications wouldn't be out until May. So hopefully since we didn't hear anything about it being pushed, it's still on for early-April.

Has anyone emailed SMART and asked when they will be released?

I thought about it, but figured I'd get a cookiecutter response saying "rewards will be sent out beginning of April."

Yes. Here’s what they said a week ago:
“Hi,

Thank you for your email. Applicants will be notified via email in February if they do or do not make it past the first round and final award notifications will go out April.”
I was also told “the first half of April” over phone.

“At this time, you have not been selected for an award. The Department of Defense will continue to make awards over the next few weeks. If the Department of Defense is interested in offering you an award at a later date you will be notified.“ got this at 9am ET

Oof. Does anyone know how likely it is that I could get an award? Or is this very likely end of the road for me this year?

That's the same cookie-cutter email I got in 2018, very non-committal. But there's no way to know if they're running things the same way. I also got that email today but I was applying for a retention scholarship so I really don't know how that works.
