I think there is a dearth of searchable information regarding the "lab demo" personnel system for those entering the DOD labs, and there have been bits and pieces of information throughout this forum. If you need some information regarding this personnel and pay system and its relation to the normal work force, here is a good website that I found on an informational sheet sent to me: http://www.wpafb.af.mil/library/factshe ... sp?id=8080

The page is hosted by AFRL (Air Force Research Laboratory), but I think it also applies to positions within research labs in other branches.

As far as what each pay broadband for scientists and engineers (S&E) looks like:
DR-1 starts at $37,238
DR-2 starts at $60,078
DR-3 starts at $82,918

These are just base pay levels *without* any locality pay adjustments. I believe the locality pay adjustments (in percentage) are the same as the GS system.

This is not the case for all DoD labs. Only a couple are under pay-for-performance demo projects. Ours is here, but we use a DB scale. DB2 is GS7-11 I believe and DB4 is GS12-14
