Can I continue as an intern?

I am a 2020 scholar, with my award beginning 08-01-2020. Additionally, I am lucky to have been able to do a summer internship this year with the impacts of covid. Smart requires me to do the one internship, next summer. However, as I'm employed right now and had a late start date due to the virus, my supervisor would like me to continue a few weeks into August. Someone with prior smart experience mentioned that I needed to end my internship before my award start date, anyone know if this is true?

I was in the same situation. You have to end your intern position a day before starting with the SMART program. My intern supervisor contacted SMART and tried to convince them for an exception but they were very strict about this.

If the government is federally funded, you will have to stop a day before starting with SMART. Otherwise, if it is with a company, you will should be fine to finish it out. I was in the later situation and had no issues.
