Are you able to join the reserves while you are working to fulfil your commitment??

I imagine it largely depends on your facility, how accommodating they are and based on the relationships that you build there. I did read that reservist in federal gov't get up to 15 days of additional military leave that could be used for Annual training.

The handbook from my year said that you weren't allowed to enter into any new contractual relationships with the government while in the program.

Where in the handbook did it say that? I can only find that it says if you're called to active duty status( which includes bootcamp and training) you will be reinstated the contract once you return
