The IRS website says that scholarships that require "future services" are taxable (so the funds SMART pays to the school). Anyone know anything about this?

Few things
1. The tax situation has been discussed in several threads before
2. I don't recall hearing this argument before
3. Stipends to US citizens do not have to be reported to the IRS by SMART

Your school will give you a tax form at the end of the year, use it directly. SMART will send you a 1099, use it directly. The end.
