Should I Even Apply for 2013

Post by tcable7127 »

Hi All,

Based on what I've read I don't know whether to apply or not for this upcoming season of SMART. I would really appreciate the honest advice and critiques of the people who have at least gotten to the interview phase. My stats are posted below:

Work: Mechanical Engineer, Mustang Engineering, Present (1 Year so far)
Undergrad: BS Mechanical Engineering, Texas A&M University, 2011
Undergrad GPA: 3.05/4.0
Undergrad Research: 1 Year in two different departments
Graduate: Accepted with RA to Texas A&M Mechanical Engineering, Fall 2012
GRE (V/Q/W): 158(79%)/164(91%)/5.0
Field of Study: Turbomachinery in Aerospace applications
Letters of Reccomendation: 3 References from Professors I have worked with

You need a composite GPA greater than 3.5 to even be considered (I believe that is still a correct criteria). You may want to consider applying the year after if you can get the grades high enough.

Others are free to weigh in as well...

I agree about the GPA, but seeing as the application is free, I wouldn't recommend NOT applying.

There is a 100% chance you will not get it if you do not apply

you should always apply, the worst that's going to happen is you don't get accepted. It never hurts to try!

The required minimum is 3.0, not 3.5. A 3.5 would obviously help you be more competitive, but you should definitely apply if you are interested in the program, as your GPA does meet minimum requirements. Plus, GPA isn't everything, anyway---they are looking for well-rounded individuals who will fit their needs at different facilities.

Not exactly free: around $25 to send GRE scores plus if your university charges to send transcripts (which mine does).

Just as an fyi, I've made it through to this point with an undergrad GPA of 3.6 and a grad school GPA of 3.1-3.4. For reference, I went to a not-so-academically challenging military college and graduated with a B.S. in biology and am now pursuing a PhD in microbiologist. Last year I had not yet passed my qualifiers, but this year I have. I have made it through the first round both years, but have not been interviewed. However, as has been said elsewhere in this forum, not being interviewed is not automatically a sign that you will not receive an award. Also, I think in my case the reason I was not selected last year and may not get it this year is more a function of my focus area rather than my qualifications. This scholarship is just geared more towards students like you who have engineering backgrounds rather than a background in biological sciences. There just aren't that many awards given to students in my position.

That being said, it sounds like you meet the minimum requirements and I would encourage you to apply. It doesn't cost that much to send your GRE scores or your transcripts and the application itself doesn't take unnecessary effort to complete.

I have 3.2 undergrad GPA, 3.4 graduate, 3+ years research, and I TA. got rejected from NREIP multiple times. I made it past the first round of SMART and got a few interviews. Apply. My school is less prestigious than A&M.
