Has anyone heard anything from the 711th HPW at Wright Patterson AFB?

Yeah, I've been in close contact with the guy in control of SMART there. By anything, what are you looking to hear? He explained that they nominated 7 people and were told (I don't know when) that their top 4 were funded. He seemed really sure of it for a long time, but tried to get in contact with the higher ups today to see what he could find out for me timeline-wise and seemed not so sure about the funding after that... He said we were "shaking the hornets nest" and that EVEN higher up people at the DoD had their hands in what's going on now.

By "we", he doesn't mean the applicants, right? I'd really hate to think our justifiable impatience is irritating the powers that be.

Oh, no. Sorry that was a bit vague. More in terms of "we" - me asking him to investigate and him making calls around, not all applicants as a collective group.

You're poking a bear by emailing her. She IS aware of the delay. She KNOWS that it's causing potential recipients a lot of stress and anxiety. She has assistants who are well aware of this forum.

I can't wait until they run out of relevant animal analogies.

...so does this mean that they'll take longer to send out notifications? Or will the higher up people metaphorically light a fire under some butts and we'll hear sooner?

Try "set the dogs at thier heels". Just be sure that if you poke, prod, shake, disturb, consider, or question the dogs or any of the aforementioned menagerie, you do so at your own peril.

Well, another week another Friday. Maybe all those hornets and bears and whatnot at DoD have finally come up with something. I'm not holding my breath, but you never know.

But for our sanity I hope it's soon. Last night marked the first time this friggin' fellowship has actually showed up in my subconscious. I dreamed we finally got the email, and it said that due to all the problems, they had decided not to give any awards this year. Fortunately my dreams have no history of being prophetic.

I'm starting to get impatient. Its a month late, and in that month, I've had to decide on things without knowing my financial aid standing, I've been sitting on scholarships that I would like to let someone who needs them more have, and now I'm leaving the country tomorrow for 6 weeks and won't have internet access. I've had to leave everything with my mother for the scholarship, so she now gets to take over my position as worried and frequently checking email.
so thank you SMART and DoD for making this so much harder than it should have been.

end rant.

hopefully I won't be seeing y'all again for 6 weeks and when I get back you'll have celebrated!
good luck to everyone!

Here's a kind of cool article about pedestrians waiting for crosswalk lights.

http://www.inudgeyou.com/traffic-nudge- ... ic-lights/

A quick summary for those that don't want to read the whole article: A study on adding countdown timers to crosswalk signs and the effect on pedestrians. The piece I find most interesting is:

"by showing the duration of a red light, the countdown traffic light effectively eliminates uncertainty thereby reducing cognitive stress since we are no longer charged with closely monitoring the signal while pondering the decision to stay or cross."

I feel that much of our "cognitive stress" could be avoided in our situation with a bit more open communication on the delay and a little less uninformed waiting.

Just my two cents.

Absolutely agree... I would also consider that a much more professional way for ASEE/SPO to handle the situation.

Wanted to be a SMART scholar but have to make a decision now. I even had two places tell me they were submitting my name. But I have no other choice. I didn't interview for fulltime employment because I wanted to go to graduate school and I wanted to work for the DoD. But as of today I'm out of options. I'm taking the funding from the university because the deadline is today. Wanted to wait for SMART, too, but can't take the chance.

Tell us again how important science, engineering and technology scholars are for the country? Oh yeah, they're important but not important enough to keep in the loop of the process, and to notify on a timely basis.

Best of luck to the rest of you.

... really? I didn't think they were allowed to say anything. Did the guy in control of SMART at the 711th tell you that you were one of the 7 or one of the top 4 that was getting funded?

I know that everyone must wait on final official notification for certainty, but do others already know this, too, and I'm the only one left wishing, hoping and dreaming?

No, I think your situation is the norm. In previous years plenty of non-interviewed people got awards, and plenty of interviewed people didn't. The most information the SFs can tell us even in theory is that they ranked us highly, but those rankings go into the black maw of SMART bureaucracy and no one, not even the SFs, knows what's going to come out.
