SFs that do work with HCI

Post by noblerare »

Hi there, I was actually a 2009 Award recipient for my undergrad. I am almost done with my three-year service commitment and applying for a master's degree in Human Computer Interaction for fall 2015. I am going to reapply to the SMART program for my funding. In the process of selecting sponsoring facilities, do any of you have experience or suggestions on SFs that do relevant work with HCI?

I've only read a bit about the following locations but don't have any firsthand accounts on them:
Army Research Lab - Human Research and Engineering Directorate - Adelphi, MD
Air Force Research Lab - Space Vehicles Directorate - Albuquerque, NM
Space and Missile Systems Center - LA, CA
Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR) - San Diego, CA

Can anyone provide me something on what these locations are like and an account of what your experience was like there? Thank you.

Larry

You missed the single greatest concentration point of HCI in the country: Orlando, FL...

Army, Navy, and AF all have folks located next door to UCF and co-located with the Institute for Simulation and Training.

I thought HRED was in Aberdeen, MD and not at the Adelphi, MD location of ARL.

But, great reaching out early.

I tell my students/young friends to tell me where they want to live, what kind of fun they want to have and then I'll tell them where to locate. Based on that location, I'll try and find the right office to do research with.

Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestion, Larry.

Are you talking about the Naval Air Warfare Center - Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD)?

It is the only SF I see that is located in Orlando, FL.

That's the one... But the other services have labs co-located there as well.
