They run late so don't stress if you don't hear anything by months end.

"Dear XXX
We are pleased to inform you that your application has been reviewed and you are eligible for the next phase of the Department of Defense (DoD) SMART scholarship selection process. As part of this process, you may be contacted for an interview. Neither this email nor interview is a promise of an award.

The 2013 SMART Scholarship-for-Service awards will be announced in the Summer of 2013 contingent on the availability of appropriated funds.

Please be advised that the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) is the only entity that can officially inform you of your award status.

We congratulate you on your success thus far. If you have any questions, please contact us at smart@asee.org.

On behalf of the DoD,

Thank you,
The ASEE SMART Program Team""

Woohoo! Though I can't say I really like the "Summer of 2013" announcement date...

SO what phase are we in if we get the confirmation email.
Is the next step a phone interview? Is that difficult?

Interesting question. Looking at the message and the timeline, I would say that this was the level 2 selection notification. I also think that this is the first notification they sent out (so they didn't announce results for Level 1). It could be the level 3 point, but I have never seen the government do anything early.

What is your interpretation?

I'll be the first to own up to not getting it....

I made it to the next phase! However, the statement about being contingent upon funds is not encouraging.

How many years after graduation does one need to work for the DOD if they get the SMART Scholarhip?

My application was not submitted for further consideration. I was told my research was garbage and that I should go back to flipping burgers....tough crowd at SMART.

I did not make it past this round. Doesn't everyone that meets the basic eligibility make it past the first and second round? Also, to the applicants that did make it past this round; are any of you applying for graduate school funding by any chance? I am really confused and frustrated about this rejection.

Basic eligibility gets you past the first round, for which there weren't any official notifications sent out. This was the second round of cuts, which is basically the top 50% of applicants, as decided by panels of government/academia professionals in STEM fields.

I made it past this round, applying for 1 year of Master's funding. Also, I'm a retention applicant, meaning that I currently work for the DoD.

I was also rejected. I have 3.4 gpa and will be starting my junior year for mechanical engineering in the fall. Letters of recommendation from my physics and two calc professors. I imagine my gpa hurt me.

Could you please rub it in a little more!!! It is likely that I would have turned it down anyway because I do not want to owe my time to anyone when I complete my education. I am just a little bitter because of the time and effort that I put into this application. I was selected as a back up as a sophomore two years ago and now did not make it past the second round as a senior that is about to graduate with a 4.0/4.0 GPA from a ABET accredited school and has already received offers from three top ten graduate programs. Also, I participated in the NREIP last summer and have several contacts at the sponsoring facility that I chose as my number one. SOMETHING DOES NOT ADD UP!!!

I also was denied today. Last year I was put the second round of awards waiting list. I was recommended by a facility and everything. My GPA went down .04 to a 3.78 so I am not so sure as to why I didn't make it this time either.

Good luck to all who did though. It's a lot of money while in college.

Sorry - I didn't mean to rub anything in. I was just trying to answer Michael's questions. In my understanding, the 50% cut is done in "bins" such that people applying for graduate funding are compared only to other applicants who are also applying for graduate funding. So you were in a totally different pool this year than when you applied as a sophomore. And at this stage, your contacts at the sponsoring facility wouldn't have helped - the SFs don't see the applications until after the 50% cut.

I'm sorry things didn't work out for you...

Continuing on. Currently 1st year PhD with 4.0 and have MS in chemistry with 3.80 GPA and 4 publications. Letters of rec from current advisor, masters advisor, and another chem professor at masters institution. Undergraduate GPA was horrible, however ~3.0.

Hello everyone! I am a sophomore intending to be an EE once I attend four-year institution in the fall of this year (I am currently graduating from my local Community College). I have a 4.0 GPA and about 2 years of work experience with the DOD. I received an email this morning informing me that have I made the initial cut, which I am very excited about. Round one: done. On to round two! Good luck everyone, and condolences for those who did not make it at this point.

I am currently a sophomore pursuing a degree in Computer Science with Math and Graphic Design minors from Ohio Northern University. Currently I have a 3.53 GPA (would be much higher but one class got me) and had a 4.0 in high school. I applied to work with Wright Pat and the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Philly.

I received the email saying I had made it past the first 2 rounds of screening today and had a question about what is to come. Would anyone be able to pass on some wisdom about what kind of interview process those of us who got the notification have to look forward to?

Denied as a junior physics major from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a 3.65 GPA, 2 summers research at CERN, a year research for IceCube, and letters of rec from two project managers for CMS. Pretty crazy that I wasn't even in the top half; must be some outstanding students applying for this. Good luck to everyone.

Did anyone else notice that the email sent yesterday says awards will be announced in SUMMER of 2013? Does that mean the March 31 notification date is no longer?
