Congrats to the 130 that made it! For the rest of us, look on the bright side the US government doesn't own us!

Yeah, I was actually a bit relieved, as it made a very tough decision VERY simple, lol.

Wow, what a bummer. After such a long wait, this email is a big let down. I received it at 11:13AM Pacific Time.

Dear _______,

This message is to inform you that you were not chosen as one of the 130 Round 1 Finalists for this year's award competition. Please note, a second round of up to 20 additional awards may be issued this month. Your application may be reconsidered for an award at that time. ASEE will keep you apprised of your status as new information becomes available. We appreciate your interest in the SMART Scholarship Program.

Thank you,

The ASEE SMART Scholarship Program Team

Just got the rejection letter...

CONGRATS to the 130 selected few! Sucks I, and most, didn't make it, but glad to finally hear.

Good luck to all!

I got rejected as well. I was applying for 3-4 years Ph.D in electrical engineering.

Congrats to all those who got the award!!! Best of luck to the rest of us for round 2 or next year! It was great being part of this forum. =)

Got the rejection letter. If I were going to get rejected anyway, I'm glad it happened like this. It made me realize that maybe I don't want to work for the DoD

I can confirm that they letters did go out. I got mine @11:50AM Eastern today. I am in the process of reading through all the terms / conditions to see if anything has changed from past years.

I got the rejection email! I am actually soo relieved. I'm terrible, I know. The scholarship would have been too much money to refuse, but I would have hated working for the DoD. It's much better that it's gone to people that appreciate it.

I'm so glad I got rejected! Honestly, if I had gotten accepted I would've rejected it.

Wow, common wisdom is for retention applicants to have a slight advantage.

Well, this will be the last time I apply for US Govt. funded scholarships. I got the rejection at 1:05 PM CST, nearly a year after I first applied. Seems they should send out a bottle of your favorite liquor with the rejection letters to take the edge off :-P

So, 130 Round 1 recipients and 20 Round 2... What does 150 offers amount to of the total# of applicants that were still waiting for an answer? Sucks that they kept so many of us on the line for so long just to get the shaft. But honestly... after the wait, and knowing how it is to work for the government, and knowing that we'd have been forced to relocate to a crappy military post and assist the most powerful country the world has ever known kill innocent civilians... maybe we should toast to our good fortunes and thank God for preventing us from selling our souls for $$$ =-)

I believe this has been true up until this year. I have good knowledge that says recruitment applicants were highly prioritized this year over retention, and I have seen further information today that supports this.

It still stings to get rejected but this frees me up for the future. I have a Plan B in place so I'm alright in the end and will still go to school. Just will take longer working part time but still rewarding.

Rejected as a 4 years, PhD Oceanography, retention applicant.

I think my SF is going to be more irritated than me. I was told by several people in my SF and Agency that I was a shoe in. Not so much it seems.

Not planning on applying for next year. My Plan B is more stable to be honest.

I was disappointed by my rejection letter, like most of you, but this way I get to co-op with Boeing like I originally wanted. I will not be recommending this program to my friends; SMART has officially lost its charm between the trials of the application this year and the cries of past accepted applicants.

If this is true, then someone screwed up big time. I know several people who are retention applicants who are now leaving. Even tho their agencies are begging them to stay. I'm still deciding what to do.

How many retention applicants are still going for their degrees and/or leaving their agency?

I got rejected too... Honestly though, I am a little glad I didn't get it. I mean, I am really disappointed, but I was told by my top SF that I was fourth on the list, and they were only given one. Also, I don't need this scholarship like some people seem to. I am an undergrad with a full ride, so I would have felt a little off taking money from someone who needed it and was not just looking for a cool internship.

I am curious, though: Are any of you recipients looking for funding for a bachelor's or master's degree? I've just seen PhD candidates.

Womp, womp. PhD candidate in Microbiology, asking for 1.5 years of funding, denied. I won't be re-applying because by the time the money would actually start coming in, I will likely be writing my dissertation. I'm ok with this; I'm already funded by my university and I've started looking into other opportunities post-graduation and have found a few that sound like a good fit.

Congratulations to those who received the scholarship and good luck to everyone.
