2012 Applicants
Re: 2012 Applicants
Everytime someone asks me if I've heard anything (which lately is very frequently) I die a little more. Thanks for the venting opportunity all. Commiseration loves company. Now I just want to know who is responsible at DoD for holding this up. Not that I could do anything with that information, but atleast I could put a name to my frustrations.

This has been me multiple times every single day. :(Trying2Relax wrote:Everytime someone asks me if I've heard anything (which lately is very frequently) I die a little more..

couple = 2
few = 3 or 4
many = 5 or more
noun, pronoun
adjective
1.
not many but more than one:
Where are people finding their definitions? Few does not indicate any specific number. Not three...not four... It is a relative term that means more than one, but less than many (many also being a relative term), which was likely strategically chosen so as to have no expected time frame in which a decision should go out. I hope we hear soon just like everyone else, but three weeks does not mean we should have our hopes up any more than the past few weeks.

1. few
Generally means three. No less than three can be slightly more. Three is the most common number associated with few.

Re: 2012 Applicants
Don't forget "several" which usually means about 4. They could be shutting down the program you know.
Re: 2012 Applicants
They did say "the next few weeks OR SO"
Or so could mean another week longer
Or so could mean another week longer
Re: 2012 Applicants
I don't know about what other people have heard, but according to an email I received today from the SF that put my name forward, the DOD still hasn't decided on a budget.

UUUUGGGGHH. At this point, I don't even care what they tell me, I just need to know! This is getting totally ridiculous.OMGWTF wrote:I don't know about what other people have heard, but according to an email I received today from the SF that put my name forward, the DOD still hasn't decided on a budget.
Any chance you can share the text of the email with us? I know it won't make much difference, but I still have an urge to dissect all the wording :(
Re: 2012 Applicants
Sponsoring Facilities are as far from the SMART program as the applicants at this point. I would take what they say with a grain of salt. Treat it as though it were a piston this forum.OMGWTF wrote:I don't know about what other people have heard, but according to an email I received today from the SF that put my name forward, the DOD still hasn't decided on a budget.
The holdup is the lawyers looking over the program. The recent ISP debacle that caused current recipients to pursue legal action probably got the smart management in trouble for trying to make changes to government contracts without the proper procedure. The DoD is probably overreacting and putting all SMART documents through the whole gambit of signatures to ensure they don't do something as asinine again.

When your source also states the definition of few is a fat elephant whore or future ex-wife, it probably is not reliable.gatsby wrote:Guest 2012 wrote: Few-

Further, a definition of "gatsby" from urban dictionary, FTW:
gatsby
1. One who is deficient in judgment, sense, or understanding.
2. A fool or an idiot
Oh, sweet irony.

And gatsby, I should be clear--I am not making an attack on your or trying to start a flame war--the irony was too perfect. I really mean no disrespect.
I only mean to caution people on reading too far in to the wording by SMART/ASEE/SPO, etc.. No need to incite false hope (or an increase sense of..) as I know we are all actively hoping to hear every day.

Chosen and the #1 answer, few = three, rarely four
Answer provided 6 years ago...
Seriously though, my AP English teacher back in '88 always said to use that as a rule of thumb. In actuallity, you are correct, few is an indefinite number and therefore (IMHO) a useless and ambigous word.
BTW, it was meant to be a joke...

Re: 2012 Applicants
Since they haven't given us any timeline, I emailed ASEE today to ask about orientation. This is their response:
Due to the delay in this year's awards there is no date for orientation set this summer. Given the delay in the award announcements there may not be a traditional orientation event this year. Once we have an update we will notify this year's applicants and/or new Scholars. Thank you for your continued interest in the SMART Scholarship Program.

Out of morbid curiosity, what was the interval last year between notifications and orientation? I have a bad feeling that the much-debated definition of "few" may be about to expand.gatsby wrote: Due to the delay in this year's awards there is no date for orientation set this summer. orientation was mid-july last year.

They're redefining the word Late. or Deadline. So much that not even urbandictionary can keep up.smart_hopeful wrote:Out of morbid curiosity, what was the interval last year between notifications and orientation? I can appreciate the joke; however, I would like to point out that the definition you quoted is the seventh definition on the list... I much prefer number 1, 2, and 3:
1. a synonym for cool, swanky, or just generally off the hizzle
2. an undefinable feeling resulting in shouting a lot, bliss
3. N. Shortening of the title of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, 'The Great Gatsby,' a book about the unattainable dream.
NOTE in number 3: "the unattainable dream"... also provides some irony given the theme of this blog and the current situation.
