Internship following award
Internship following award
I applied December of 2017 and am now hearing back from SFs. I'm graduating in may of 2019 and my understanding was that the first internship would be for the summer of 2019 since the internship comes after the awarded year but in speaking with some SFs, they believe the internship is for this summer. Can anyone here provide clarification on this? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Internship following award
I'm not a recipient but from all the info I have you do your internship the summer after the first year of school following the award because of the processing time required for clearances and such. So I believe you would do an internship summer 2019 then start working full time immediately after. Yours is an interesting situation because you would graduate before starting the internship. If anyone knows otherwise please reneg.
Re: Internship following award
Just to clarify, you are graduating and the SMART scholarship would be for another degree starting Fall 2018?
Re: Internship following award
Scratch that, just re-read the post. With you situation I am not sure. I would email SMART and ask perhaps?
Re: Internship following award
May I ask what your major is?
I am graduating in spring of 2019 as well and while I have not heard anything the facilities I applied for seemed to be a real hit or miss as to whether they will call. I am majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in microbiology.

I'm majoring in computer science and I will probably call or email the smart program tomorrow to clarify the situation. Good luck!
Re: Internship following award
Someone in last years award was in this situation. There is no internship this summer. In his case he was just like the rest of us except now he is being placed in a full time position instead of an internship starting this summer.

Re: Internship following award
I received the scholarship last year for only one year of funding.
Applied Dec 2016
Awarded Fall 2017-Spring 2018 school year
Graduate May 2018
Immediately begin working after graduation. No internship.
You only need to complete the internships if you are awarded 2 or more years of funding. Also as a heads up you will only receive stipend payments from August to June (not the full 12 months) since the stipend is prorated and your facility will begin paying you instead of SMART.

Two or more years of funding? During my interviews, I was told that I would intern during summer 2019. I have 1-1.5 years of schooling left. Maybe LMI is doing things differently this year.

Re: Internship following award
Maybe because of the last half year? Basically if you are awarded in 2018 and graduate May 2019 (1yr), you will not intern. If you graduate Dec 2019 after 1.5 years then you have to intern since you would otherwise have a gap that summer between semesters. I do know that sometimes facilities can get confused. For example I was in contact with a few individuals from my SF. One was handling my hiring and the other handled SMART scholars in general. Since they were handling multiple people at once I got mixed into the emails for details about the internship. After calling to clarify she mentioned it was a mistake and I will be hired immediately upon graduation.
While all this was going on there was no confusion from SMART. They only sent me emails pertaining to organizing my hiring and none related to doing a summer internship.
Sometimes the SFs and SMART don’t communicate the best but overall you do not need to internship if you have one year of funding. I forgot that you can be awarded half years so to rephrase: anything greater than a year of funding would require an internship.

Re: Internship following award
1) You will NOT intern this summer if you are awarded it this summer. You will need to visit your SF for a day or two though.
2) If you have a summer between two semesters of class, you will intern. So 1.5 years counts.
3) If you do not have a summer between classes (1 year), you will not "intern". You will go directly to full time.

Re: Internship following award
Like guest502 said. If you have a summer between when you get funded and when you finish school you have to do an internship during that summer. So if you end up finishing in may you won't have to do the internship. If you finish in December you will have to.GuEsT0102 wrote:littlehope wrote:I received the scholarship last year for only one year of funding.
