Is there an internship the first summer after you accept the award?

Nope, it is the summer afterwards. So if you applied December 2017, the internship would be Summer 2019. A big reason is because SMART takes super long to evaluate the applications and it takes even longer for security clearances to be granted. PS: Amen to your username
