Re: Internship
Mine was scheduled for me. It's 10 weeks, we had no say at our SF. I ended up with most of May and half of August off with how my school runs classes. We have a lot of interns though half from SMART and half from somewhere else.

Not starting until August so working on the funding gap haha
Email SMART and let them know that! I think I've seen them make an exception for peeps that aren't starting until august. (Unless it's personal choice then idk if they'd help)

Re: Summer school
Want to or need to? If it isnt a degree requirement they're going to need proof of Why This is beneficial to your future work at your SF before they'd even consider it. If it's a required class you'll have to justify why you have to take it in the summer and not during a semester. My guess is they'r...

Re: Do we still get paid the stipend the month we graduate?
Your yearly salary is the given 25k, you are paid per month that you are a student. During your final year you aren't a student after May therefore you are not paid after May. This shouldn't matter because you should be starting your full time job around June the year you graduate. If you are gettin...

We selected 3 last year, I imagine you did the same this year. I don't think you can see which three they were. However anyone that calls/emails you should give you the opportunity to schedule an interview then you can do your research before the interview.

I personally don't think you should be contacting anyone...unless you already have a connection to your SF i.e. you were a pathways intern there before applying to this scholarship.

Have either of you traveled outside of the country extensively? (Non-European countries mostly) It could just be because they feel you have to many non-us citizen contacts they don't want to easily grant it? I think that's part of the reason they make us fill out the travel forms - it makes it easie...

I live in Japan until near my internship. The physical school is close enough, but my only physical address is in Japan. wonder how that will work. Technically you're study abroad in japan though right? so wouldn't they have to consider that your current academic address? If not then that's probabl...

Hey guys, I didn't make it past the semifinals round and was wondering what your first semester GPA's were? I had a 3.88 and fairly good accolades. I am a freshman at Penn State. I am really sad and highly disappointed. Congrats to all who made it! That's a really strong GPA. What were your accolad...

Re: Fall 2018 Applicant
Hi! (To you and others applying in the fall) Start researching sponsoring facilities now! Watch who gets interviews and if people are willing to share who hires a math/physics major. There are a lot of engineering majors on here - you'll have to look around for some physics and math majors! I sugges...

Is your school more than 50 miles from your SF? If so you'll receive some sort of support! Basically it's to cover if you have to relocate/pay two rents or pay a lot for transportation in the summer.

No, this is only for DoD specific facilities. There are hundreds (probably way more) federally funded facilities and this scholarship isn't for any of them. Some have their own scholarship programs, but SMART facilities are the ones in the link above.

Re: 2018 SMART Application Evaluation Guide
Correct me if I’m wrong, but after the semi finalists are selected, it’s up to the sponsoring facilities to choose who to sponsor. So is this evaluation guide primarily used to determine the semi finalists? Or are the sponsoring facilities also using this method of evaluation? If it’s only used to ...

I'm just curious about my odds moving forward. For example, what percent of the applicants made it to the semi-finals and how many from this pool will be awarded the final scholarship? If anyone has any idea it would be greatly appreciated! There is a scholarship stats page that said 14% of the tot...

Re: Any other current DOD employee also a semi-finalist?
So you're interning, which is totally fine but because it is federally funded you cannot be paid by SMART and the federally funded internship at the same time. So you just need to officially stop working for the facility before the first month of your stipend. It's a weird government funding thing, ...

I never gave them anything official. If I remember correctly I talked about it on the phone in my interview but definitely didn't send a letter or anything to SMART.

Wow, just reread that and realized it's incredibly ambiguous. I got one email saying I made it past the first round. Nothing about expanding the number of ME candidates. Probably just means you were in the top chunk of the ME group. Last year a similar thing happened with acceptances. Two large rou...

Re: How important are your preferences?
It's not out of the question that you'll get an interview from a non-preference. However you're more likely to get one from a preference. You'll be top of their list of people to review if you put them down because that's how they will sort first. Depending on the SF they'll also sort by school (i.e...

Re: Going below full time status
So one of two things may work in your favor. 1) if you aren't on probation, don't worry about it and just drop anyway. If it'll drop your gpa below 3.0 or something you're gonna go on probation anyway!!! Probation is fine as long as you don't mess up the next semester. 2) If it's after the end of ad...
