Re: Start Date after graduation

I will be graduating at the beginning of May. My SF has been extremely helpful in getting as much information as they currently have about starting my position since January 2018. At least for my situation and SF, they realized I am moving cross-country and are pretty understanding. So the basically...

Re: EWP

I took the same course "Research Elect & Computer Eng MS Thesis" (aka not a class but dedicating time to my research) multiple times as well as put it in my EWP last year and I have had no problems. As long as your credit hours make you full time according to your school, you are in the clear. They ...

Re: Not completing the master's thesis requirement

Good luck to everyone attempting to finish because I’m sure many of us in the same boat can surely sympathize. I turned in my first draft last week and have to defend next week. I am at a level way past paranoid, but fingers crossed it all goes well and I don’t even have to contemplate the “what if”...

Re: Picked by multiple SFs

Since it seems to be a very rare occurrence but still happens, and this is an honest guess, maybe they only ask if two facilities rank you at the same spot. Cause that would explain the rarity and why if one ranks you higher then SMART will just pick that one but if there is a “tie” then they ask th...

Re: Internship following award

Maybe because of the last half year? Basically if you are awarded in 2018 and graduate May 2019 (1yr), you will not intern. If you graduate Dec 2019 after 1.5 years then you have to intern since you would otherwise have a gap that summer between semesters. I do know that sometimes facilities can get...

No internship. You only need to complete the internships if you are awarded 2 or more years of funding. Also as ...

I took detailed notes though on what my CPA did and I think I'll try to do it myself next year-we'll see. Same here. I didn’t know you didn’t have to pay fe...

Re: Rejection email?

No, they don’t let anyone know early. They let everyone know whether they have been accepted or rejected at the same time. Not only that but they leave “open-ended” rejections since they give out offers later in the summer if some of the original offers were declined.

Re: Stipend Taxes

Unfortunately you are not able to file online for free due to the 1099-MISC form since it is the “self-employed” form. Even if you aren’t claiming it as self employment income you still need to fill out your return with the 1099-MISC form, thus you have to pay for the “self-employed” version of serv...

Yes because you are still a student even if it’s for a day of that month. So the last payment would be the third week of May.

Re: How are Self Employment Tax Deductions Cheaper?

I just had my CPA run everything. SMART stipends are not subject to self employment tax. I went from owing $3,000 on $14,000 worth of stipends to around $1500-1700. Yay! You give me hope! Haha But on another note, yeah I definitely believe that we are not subject to self-employment tax considering ...

How are Self Employment Tax Deductions Cheaper?

What are some items that people have written off in the past. I have basically found that either people file in a way that they don't pay the self-employment tax or enter a massive amount of deductibles so that the total "earned income" is taxed even less. So far I can think to deduct the following:...

Re: Interviews

To add on to kbl2017, as for their 1st, 2nd, and 4th point they are spot on but to add my own experience to their third point; oddly enough I had 5 interview calls. One from one of my “preferences” and four from not. All five called without any warning what-so-ever. So it is completely up to the SF ...

Re: Working on the side

So I inquired about working over the 16hr/wk limit originally because I accepted a co-op position before accepting SMART and I didn’t want to back out of my commitment to them. So I just was honest with my SF that I believed the co-op experience would be just as beneficial as any classes I could tak...

Re: Not completing the master's thesis requirement

Ooo same exact boat here and same question. Also, if you just graduate without thesis when originally stating you would graduate with, do you need to put in a degree change? I was looking at the form and there is no indications between masters with as without thesis. Asking as a precautionary measure.

Re: Questions about applying for Aero MS/PhD

Glad it was helpful. Trust me I was in the same exact boat and completed my application in under a week. I think a lot of SFs realize that applicants typically don’t have time to do it in depth investigation of most of the SFs and can be a little forgiving. I think it’s a few stubborn ones that only...

1) Changing your award length (either getting additional years awarded or taking them off) can be difficult and put you at risk to lose the award and have to pay back anything you used. BUT it has been done both ways in the past so I would just mark whichever you feel is truely the most likely. 2) I...

I submitted my travel document for the winter break in August. It took less than a day for SMART to send a confirmation email, and it was luckily as simple as that. Once we actually have clearances there will be more to the process but for now that’s all we need.
