Re: Questions For You all (Future Applicant)
No, this was an advice for a future applicant post. My point is that the scholarship has nothing to do with your job. If you do your due diligence before accepting and understand what it is that you can expect from the job, than there is no negative to accepting the scholarship. Also, it is a comple...

Re: Questions For You all (Future Applicant)
But, this is about a future Aerospace Engineering major. A lack of funding and equipment is not really a thing in that field. Engineers are in high demand with the SMART. Another place you might look into if you are in the DMV area is the applied physics lab. I’ve only heard good things about workin...

Re: 2020 Semifinalists
It all comes down to the needs of the DoD and it just so happens they only need a few chemists. This is my last shot, but I finally have a facility that pulled through. It’s such an easy application; after the first time, you just submit the same thing the next year.

Re: 2020 Semifinalists
I just read the article. It only says they were selected. It may be that they were told by a sponsoring facility that their names were submitted, but that’s still not a guarantee. SMART has been pretty steady with their notifications in my experience (this is my 4th time applying as a Ph.D student)....

Re: Questions For You all (Future Applicant)
It is blatantly false to say you will work with antiquated equipment at any given facility and not learn much. A Ph.D is expected to actively pursue funding throughout their career in a research based position. You get what you put into your job. It will be no different than getting employed by the ...

What’s the situation?
Hi, all.
Does anyone have intel into whether COVID-19 has affected the pace of the SMART program’s decision for this year? Additionally, my probable sponsoring facility said the current situation will probably have no bearing on funding, as the fiscal budget was already secured for this year.

Veteran without highschool transcript
Has the High School transcript always been a requirement. I am 29 and specifically served in the Marines because my grades sucked. Pretty sure I had a 2.1 GPA or less. I have applied and been a finalist for the SMART in my Ph.D program the last two years. I couldn't have submitted the transcript bef...

Re: It's Feb 1st, will an email come even if I'm didn't make
I'm certain the DoD will be the first to be lifted. Likely within the next couple of weeks. President Trump is simply, and to be frank, rightfully pausing any movements by Obama's cabinet members until they are replaced by the yet to be confirmed nominations.

Re: It's Feb 1st, will an email come even if I'm didn't make
I emailed smart this morning to get some information (both about semi-finalist decisions and the hiring freeze). Here is what they said: semifinalists - Thanks for your interest in the SMART program. Applicants will be notified in February if they have moved from the evaluation panel to the selectio...

Re: Semi-finalist emails? 2017
I think its a fair guess actually. So far the people who lost access said they got the message "Only semifinalists may access the system at this time." But you are right, its still just a guess. I don't think the award sign in will work unless you are a finalist with an offer from a sponsor.

Re: Does veteran's preference apply to being picked up?
I have been wondering this same thing as I am also 10-point eligible. There is an older discussion regarding the preference but never actually addresses where the points count for consideration. My thoughts are that they might not apply until you are chosen as a finalist. Unless the 1st stage of rev...
