I expect they will send out the semi-finalist notifications on or around Feb 1st seeing as thats when applications will be forwarded to DoD facilities.

Re: email from SMART program?
If things go according to last year this is the timetable I expect it do be somewhat similar but they may wait till after Semi-Finalists to do Fall transcripts, SF-87, and Fingerprint cards since I do not believe those 3 to be determining factors for Semi-Finalists. Dec 24th - Request for Fall Trans...

Re: Cash Award
Yes you will have to pay taxes on all of your cash award regardless of what you spend it on. The cash award gets sent directly to you via direct deposit, hence you will be required to pay taxes on it. You may be able to file the housing as a deductible, not sure because I am not an accountant. You s...

Re: Undergrad to Grad
I will be a freshman this year at Carnegie Mellon University and I'm gonna be majoring in mechanical engineering. I've been thinking about applying to this program because I really need the aid. But I had wanted to go straight into graduate work right after i finished my undergrad. Would this be po...

Re: General q's
No joke man, my 4.0 is really all I have going for me though, so I'll cross my fingers and hope they need some EE's somewhere. Does anyone know exactly what kind of work that the intern jobs entail? Most of the undergrads won't have any design experience, so what would they do during the internship...

Re: 2011 Round
Thanks for the advice Chris. I believe I am going to make the switch to Aerospace because thats what I really want to do, and people say "do what makes you happy". Multivariable integration....no thanks. haha The few things you mentioned about Aerospace work looks very attractive. And when people as...

2011 Round
So the application opens up this August for the 2011 round of scholarships, and I am torn between majors. Background: I applied for this scholarship in the 2010 round with electrical engineering as my major. I was named a semi-finalist, had an interview with a facility, had an interview with the SPO...

Re: FINALIST!!!!
I just got the same email. Doesnt look like they plan to name anyone alternates this year, just gonna see how it pans out I guess. I was shocked that I didnt get chosen, seeing as how I did get an interview from both a facility and the SPO. Anyways, I am thankful they had the kindness to send out th...

Re: Pre-emptive SMART Interview E-Mail Discussion
By the way ---- in case you haven't figured it out yet. The people who are getting phone interviews at this moment are those who were recommended for an award. The reason that you are getting conflicting answers during those interviews (in terms these fellows having the list of recommended people o...

Re: Pre-emptive SMART Interview E-Mail Discussion
Just finished my phone interview, very simple and scripted. Just yes and no questions. One thing they did ask that I believe holds a lot of value was "have you been contacted by any facilities"? I was, and she asked what the interviewers name was, so thankful I remembered. I even got to change my pr...

Re: Pre-emptive SMART Interview E-Mail Discussion
So last year I applied for the scholarship as a freshman and was named a finalist and ultimately an alternate. This year my resume has only improved, my essay was better and my scholarship would only be for 2 years at a cheaper university and yet I have yet to recieve an interview. Maybe there's so...

Re: Pre-emptive SMART Interview E-Mail Discussion
At this it seems like my chances at becoming a finalist are minimal, but if I get named an Alternate how do can I increase our chances at being selected later? Pray? Thats about it. The only way you would be selected would be if someone declines the award. Which is possible, but of course not likel...

Re: Pre-emptive SMART Interview E-Mail Discussion
Yeah, but as alternates it'll be the recommended who got cut, I don't think unrecommended are still in the game. Yeah, I dont think they are either. Another poster said that in his interview the person stated that there are 400ish left that are getting these interviews and that leaves 100ish that g...

Re: Pre-emptive SMART Interview E-Mail Discussion
So..?? Is the general consensus of the board that if you have not received an email scheduling an interview by now then you are pretty much SOL? Way to be blunt about it, but I wouldnt say that just yet. It's likely that people who have not received an interview yet could be named alternates. And j...

Re: Pre-emptive SMART Interview E-Mail Discussion
No interview yet for me unfortunately, I'm a grad student with one year left. Anyone get an interview request today? During my interview with a DoD facility the person interviewing me told me that he likes to chose people who will have at least 1 summer internship at his facility. So while 1 year s...

(if you don't mind me asking..) I chose the following 3 for my facilities: 1) Redstone Arsenal, AL 2) Eglin AFB, Fl 3) N...
