Re: Question about Summer Internships / Summer Schedule
To add a little bit, internships are between 8 and 12 weeks normally (you choose the dates and time frame). As long as your SF agrees, then it happens. SMART asks for them to begin on a Monday and end on a Friday as well. No experience with the off/cycle internship, just the normal summer ones. All ...

Re: Army Corps of Engineers
The Corps is its own Bureaucracy within the Army. They are organized geographically by Districts and the districts are subdivided into divisions. They have different responsibilities based on geographic locations too. If there is a concentration of hydroelectric power (west, northwest) versus river ...

Re: Possible to buy out of SMART?
To determine how much you owe to SMART you should be able to get an estimate online. A history of payments made to you or your institution on your behalf is an option on the award site . Browse to : ( https://smart.asee.org/award ), log in and choose "Payment History" (second choice under General In...

What happened to ASEE?
Doe anyone know why ASEE was terminated as the managing entity for the SMART Program. From what I can find it appears that SMART is recruiting an in-house program manager for their Monterrey office. Might explain why there have been hiccups with our stipend and the tuition payments.
Just curious!

Re: Writing Off Internship Costs
I am planning to claim the costs of my travel, lodging, food and utilities, etc... that I incurred this past summer. Otherwise I will have an additional $9,000 of apparent additional income . I know that these expenses are deductible if you are having to work (think internship) at a location other t...

Re: who all is applying this year?
I don't have the numbers for how many were chosen last year but here are some program scope numbers: 2013 -1,424 Participants, 298 Universities, 151 Sponsoring Facilities, 614 BS, 91 BS/MS, 257 MS, 63 MS/PhD, 399 PhD. I don't know how that would break down to a per year or per degree program but I w...

Re: Are you happy with the program?
I also find humor in the negative posts that seem to permeate this forum. I am in the first year of a three year SMART award. I am in a Human Factors Psychology PhD program. Prior to the SMART Scholarship I was using VA funding exclusively, now the VA supplements the SMART money. Here are my feeling...

Re: Any veterans using GI BILL and SMART funding?
I realize it has been a few years since the question was posted, but I figured someone else may be interested. I currently receive both the Post 911 GIB and the SMART. The VA pays the book allowance and the monthly quarters allowance just like always. They do not pay any tuition since that is covere...

I emailed them on 24 July, here is the response: SMART Jul 24 (8 days ago) to me Hi Mike, The details of the orientation are not yet confirmed. As soon as we have more information on the timing and logistics of the telephone discussion/E-Orientation, all awardees will be notified. Please let us know...

Re: TRAC-WSMR
My initial award letter was for TRAC-WSMR. They modified it the following day toTRAC- FLVN. Not totally sure why they want a cognitive/behavioral guy at Leavenworth, but I am happy to have been chosen.

Re: Notifications?
We have until 16 July to get all paperwork turned in. Also had to answer a quick online YES/NO question about whether or not we intended to accept. The note said so that they could determine if a second round of awards would be needed. Best of luck to those who may still be in the hunt

Re: 2013 Applicants
Interesting question. Looking at the message and the timeline, I would say that this was the level 2 selection notification. I also think that this is the first notification they sent out (so they didn't announce results for Level 1). It could be the level 3 point, but I have never seen the governme...
