I saw an update from one of SMART’s socials today that the SFs are in the process of finalizing their decisions.
I heard that my top SF hasn't even began interviewing people.....

Re: 2022 Semifinalists

I haven’t been contacted yet. I don’t think you should worry if you aren’t contacted. I’ve met several people who didn’t do an interview but still were chosen as finalists. I wonder if they previously interned at that facility so they already built the rapport? It would seem strange to me for a fac...

Re: How difficult is it for a SF to request a SMART scholar?

My top SF choice usually accepts ~6 applicants per year. I wonder how many were recommended but ultimately cut?

Re: How difficult is it for a SF to request a SMART scholar?

Hello, I am just going off of what I have heard about the general application process on here, but it seems like you could have multiple SF wanting to bring you on as a SMART Scholar. If this happens, you may have to re-submit your list of preferences. In the end, the applicants and SF are assigned...

How difficult is it for a SF to request a SMART scholar?

Hi, This past summer I interned with a research facility and everything went great. I applied for the SMART scholarship, listed that facility as my top preference, and made semifinalist. I reached out to my internship supervisor (a SMART scholar) and they said that they would "try to get me" as a SM...

Re: Graduate research during school semesters?

Your graduate research does not have to align with your SF research area. However, they may be less inclined to select you as a scholar.

Re: 2021 Applicants Thread

Spoke to the SMART office today. As of 3:15, there were about 2000 completed applications and about 8000 in progress. The person I spoke with indicated there might be over 500 scholarships awarded this round. That's interesting... I wonder how many out of the 8000 in progress hit that submit button...

Re: Advice for a cognitive, neural, and behavioral science applicant

I hope someone from your field can weigh in, but I'll throw this out there again about the PhD process---SMART does not play well with PhD applicants. There's a hard limit on funding. If you don't finish your research by then, you're in default with them on every penny given to you, including inter...

I am currently participating in the NREIP internship program at as a human factors engineer and would like to continue working in a DoD facility as a SMART scholar. I applied to the SMART scholar...

Re: 2021 Applicants Thread

For human factors you could try applying to some of the Navy facilities. Specifically, Naval Submarine Medical Research Lab and Naval Undersea Warfare Center have human factors scientists/engineers. I think NUWC is bigger than NSMRL so probably has more funding. Wow! Thanks for the heads up :) I'll...
