Hey there

I actually earned both a Fulgbright-Hays and SMART Scholarship at the same time.

The DOD SMART doesnt care if you get money from other places, However, the Fulbright does not allow it.

I essentially had to cut my Fulbright short, once my DOD SMART money started coming in.

But given the current political climate, I feel both the Fulbright program and the DOD SMART program are kinda up in the air

Probably not, the Fulbright Scholarship is sponsored by the State Department and you're not allowed to receive federal funding from more than one agency if you've already accepted the SMART Scholarship.

Phase 1 Scholar. PhD student in civil engineering. Thinking about applying for a Fullbright Scholarship to gain additional research experience in the field of coastal engineering. Does anyone know if this is even possible or is this a no-no for SMART awardees? The two countries I'm looking at would be Australia or the Netherlands. Only 9 months starting Fall 2026, so would be back in time for a summer internship with my SF.
