OK, so I was considering taking a position and working while in the SMART program. First, if you're going for an MS or PhD, it is obviously NOT advised to work during this time. Is it possible? Yea. It's just not a good idea.

With that said, before SMART changed management, I asked one of the previous CAs about working. She mentioned the 16 hour rule, but said that as long as your grades were good and you were progressing through the program, not much would come of it. However, I asked the same question to the new girl working the participant line (I forget her name) and she told me that if I wanted to work more than 16 hours a week, I'd have to fill out a service amendment request. For those who don't know, that's basically a piece of paperwork that adjusts the guidelines of your original agreement. Someone up the chain with SMART must approve of this adjustment. I think, unless you had a compelling reason, you wouldn't get it to fly with those guys. It is possible that you could sell them on the idea that this new job would be good experience for you, making you further prepared to join the DoD.

The real question you're getting at though, is if they will bump you out of the program if you work more than 16 hours per week. My guess would be no, but they'd be fully within their rights if you did. If you lied about it, and they later found out, it could be taken personally, which is not likely to end well for you.

My recommendation would be to sell the idea as furthering your education/preparedness. Making the request with a letter from your advisor, and someone at your facility, will take your chances from low to high.

Unknown, but how much are you willing to put a full ride scholarship, stipend, and job on the line for a few extra bucks? All hoping they don't find out, and that if they do, they don't deem you out of compliance.

Working more then 16 hours for Outside Employment

The SMART handbook states you can accept outside employment during the school year, but can only work 16 hours a week. There is no limit to the wage earned. Does anyone know if SMART really cares if you work more as long as it does not negatively impact academic performance?
