No - you're already making 15-20 an hour to do nothing during the school year so I guess they figure it's enough. Normal internships for an undergrad pay about $15 an hour if you get them and are not part of SMART. The orientation says "internship support payments are not in exchange for work done"
Only SMART pays you, just like for the travel stipend they'll approve you before summer starts for the extra $1000 a week. That way you can rent somewhere to live and a car etc while interning.
