Retention Candidates

I'm currently a DoD employee and have applied to Smart as a retention candidate. I cannot find any posts or further info about retention applicants. Does anyone have any expierence with being one of these applicants? Are retention candidates lumped into the same group as everyone else that doesn't work full time for DoD, or are they only ranked among other retention applicants?
