I am not sure when on the timeline that you need to have a security clearance by but basically here's what I had to do for mine.
1) Fill out an enormous amount of paperwork
2)Give the names of every past employer as well as family members
3) Process becomes more difficult if you are from out of the county or have an alias (aka adopted)
4) I had to submit my finger prints into the system

Now this is all for a Navy security clearance so I have no idea if SMART's is more or less strict but that is the summary of my experience with security clearances.

Awarding and Security Clearance

Hello all,

I am a first year awardee waiting to hear back from my SF.

I was wondering what the process of Security Clearance is once one is selected for an award. I have read in the handbook that failure to obtain clearance corresponds to dismissal from the program and funds must be reimbursed. Does the security check occur between accepting the award and when the first stipends are sent out or before employment begins in the sponsoring facility?

Thanks!!!!
