I received an award offer on Friday.

I was a 2011 cohort as well. I have a different memory of the situation. I tried to introduce myself to everyone I could and get their story as well, so I'd say I had a pretty good sample set. I put the numbers at about 35% PhD students, 15% MS, and 50% BS. (I didn't meet anyone working on their AS, but I assume there may be a handful to add some margin of error).

Your a little off on your numbers. In the first few years of Smart the numbers were split about 50/50 between graduate and undergraduate. There was a power point somewhere about it. That being said about 75% of awardees were either electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering. My Sponsoring facility has mostly PHDs, 3 or 4 from the 2012 cohort year alone. Also only about 120 to 150 awards went out last year due to budget cuts.

It should be remembered that many sponsoring facilities are not interested in undergraduate or master's degrees. Most SFs already have pretty good recruitment of those individuals. I would venture that most SMART scholars are at the PhD level.

Given that the awardees were given 2 weeks to accept/decline, should we expect that if any awards remained due to decliners, they will be offered today or tomorrow?
Has anyone who was declined 2 weeks ago, got an offer from them today?

I had to e-mail them at smart@asee.org and ask my status. They sent one back saying "You should have received the following email from SMART:" followed by the rejection letter.

I might have not made it past the first round but that doesn't stop me from hoping to get it in the second round. Good things come to those who wait.

We have until 16 July to get all paperwork turned in. Also had to answer a quick online YES/NO question about whether or not we intended to accept. The note said so that they could determine if a second round of awards would be needed. Best of luck to those who may still be in the hunt

It also has to deal with whether or not your field is something your listed sponsoring facilities needed or desired. If they have no need for your expertise, then your credentials do not matter.

I was accepted and this is true. I believe I was accepted based on my previous research experience working under Homeland Security in undergrad. I've published some papers, but it didn't matter to them since they were focused on mining engineering material. You can have all of the publications you want, but unless it specifically matches the lab's interests, they may not care.

It also has to deal with whether or not your field is something your listed sponsoring facilities needed or desired. If they have no need for your expertise, then your credentials do not matter.

But more than likely: they live close to a sponsor facility who has a need. Yes, proximity does play a role in the decision of SMART scholars, as it does in all jobs, as hometown folks are more likely to choose and stay with the job than transplants to the area.

I am curious as to who these glorious chosen ones that we are competing against, and what great things they've accomplished that makes them worthy. Surely all 150 of them have multiple books and dozens of journal papers published, and hundreds of patents each.
