I was accepted and this is true. I believe I was accepted based on my previous research experience working under Homeland Security in undergrad. I've published some papers, but it didn't matter to them since they were focused on mining engineering material. You can have all of the publications you want, but unless it specifically matches the lab's interests, they may not care.
