Did you gentlemen have a lot of experience in the field of EE at the time you applied?

Here are my credentials

Requested only one year as I am to be entering my senior year.

It's unfortunate that you did not get an award, my guess is that there wasn't as many Chem E positions to fill. This is not the NFL draft where you take the best player available in the first round, they have to fill holes of need. It is not a reward because you are smart, it's only a reward if you are smart and they currently need your skills. I'm not sure how past years #'s were broken down but I feel fairly confident that they fluctuated and that fluctuation was due to need. Unfortunately your timing did not line up with the DoD needs, this is something that happens all the time in life.

I'm not sure if you got an interview with anybody, but basically each participating facility submitted their desired names based on that installations needs. Those installations send in their list in a ranked order to the SMART office. The budget limit is used to determine which candidates make the cut. So basically if there isn't a demand for Chem E students, there could technically be zero selected. Frankly, candidates are selected on the need of the installations and not by some predetermined requirements of the SMART program office.

I know it's a little late, but I figured I would go ahead and post. I got the email that I did not receive the award, so I wasn't in too much of a hurry to come back to this site (I didn't see the email until the next day, also).

Initials: M.M.M.
Time received: 5:06 p.m. April 1st
Major: B.S.E.E.
Year: Freshman
School: Virginia Tech
Agencies:
  • NRO- Chantilly, VA
    DISA- Arlington, VA
    NGA- Bethesda, MD
On the bright side, I just got a summer internship with the US Army Corps of Engineers! Thanks everyone for the helpful information, and congratulations to those who received it! I guess I'll see some of you back on the site next year...

Another primary recipient of the SMART Scholarship is the Army Corps of Engineers. These facilities do provide support for military facilities but they also have a huge civilian impact. The SMART scholarship is NOT a war scholarship even though it has large ties to the military.

This program is not meant to award you for being smart. This is a scholarship for service program with the hopes of attracting the best and brightest to fill weapons research positions. Frankly, what do they need chemical engineers for?
I agree that not everyone can get the award, but the SMART scholarship is not just for weapons research. The departments listed work on all aspects of making sure people deployed have the best chance at winning/surviving (in my opinion).

PSU:
Hah, wow. I would have given it to you.
My hypothesis is that the selection committee realized that you were overqualified and that you would do just fine on your own.
That's what I keep telling myself to feel better.
I'll let you know if it works.

Mike:
I hope you get something in the second round. It would be nice to hear you that you get to stay home next year.

Didn't make it. I guess I'm reenlisting and going back to Iraq for another year... Well, I'll wait till round two before I do something crazy like that.
It looks like none of the Bio-people got selected in the first round and that leaves some very qualified biologists to choose from in Round 2, so My odds went from 20% to about 0.020%
I'm happy for everyone that got selected...but why is everyone so afraid of posting their name. Believe me, I have a very unique name and I'll guarantee that I'm not locatable on Google. I've tried several times. It seems even with my unique name, there are still other famous people with the exact same name... Well, I guess it's your freedom, But everyone here will remember Mike Birkhead when I run for President or something!

Congratulations Jason, I didn't get selected, but I was starting to lean towards pulling this year for a couple of reasons.

Hopefully you can get your employer to back off on the resignation requirement.

Congratulations to the rest of you.

Didn't get it.

Junior, Penn State
Double Major in Information Sciences & Technology and Security & Risk Analysis
Active TS/SCI with Full Scope Poly Clearance
Asked for 1 year
No idea where I applied to

Oh well. The stipend would have been nice but it looks like the post-graduation offers for B.S. candidates aren't too attractive. If I go into defense contracting or consulting after graduation, I'll start off making about $25K more per year than I would have for DoD.

Congrats to everyone who got it :)

Oh, I know it.

I've worked there the last summer (and this upcoming one) and my contacts are what got me in. The problem is, with the award time, I just can't finish a degree.

I contacted my POC and sent an email to ASEE, communicating how flexible I was and my willingness to do...whatever I needed too. Hopefully they'll give me advice/tell me what they want so I don't have to formally request an award adjument and risk the scholarship.

They gave me two years and I put undecided on my application...I can go to another of my top choices and be done in two years. I see lots of solutions and communicated that with them. Now I'm just hoping they will work with me.

...strange thing is, the award is simply wrong.

I was accepted into 2 years at Rose-Hulman in Electrical Engineering.

I selected Undecided on my application, with Optical Engineering as my major (can't remember my years listed)

I'll call ASEE and my POC and try to get it figured out without losing my award....
Eglin is one of the premier AFB, if you have a chance to go their I'd think long and hard about it.

It appears that the majority of winners have a background in electrical and computer systems, with some mechanical and civil engineers. This makes sense because most weapons advancements involve computer technologies. I just wish they would give all engineering and science majors hope for acceptance. They should narrow the field more before applications even go out.
