Follow-on Funding

Post by CatWhiskers »

Has anyone had any success with follow-on funding? I'm at a point where I need to decide on whether or not I want to get my Master's after my Bachelor's but I was wondering what the process is like?

I tried to do the same thing and apply for an extra year to to get a Masters after by BS. SMART said there is a rule that follow-on funding can only be done for a minimum of an extra 1.5 years. In my situation I was doing a non-thesis Masters so it was only going to take a year. I decided to take some summer classes during my internship and as many grad level classes as I could during my senior year so that I could finish a Masters in one semester. SMART is not paying for the extra semester but they paid for grad classes (perhaps unknowingly) during my Bachelors degree and my SF approved delaying my commitment by 6 months or so.

Works for some. You can search "Masters" with a couple other keywords and there's a number of stories I've found in the past. However, SMART doesn't like prolonging education. They want people out in their workforce as fast as possible. If you're like me, they say yes and then say no at the last second, almost kicking you out of grad school after being accepted. Someone from this forum has talked with the program manager before about a situation with their..PhD, I think, and what they heard was "we paid for you, we deserve to get what we paid for".

Historically, it seems Masters students have more luck than PhDs.
I'm a Phase 2 recipient, B.S. in Computer Science, B.S. in Math from Virginia Tech Dec. 2019. I've been with SMART since Spring 2017; Dahlgren is my SF.

Don't walk, run away from SMART (see my first post on this forum).
