Fellowship Opportunity?

Post by Chicka »

I received an email from SMART today saying that the US Airforce is interested in contacting me for a research fellowship opportunity. Does anyone know what this is about? Has anyone else been contacted about a fellowship? Last email I received from SMART before this was the rejection letter.

I got one this morning as well. From what I read, it seemed unrelated to the SMART program. Have you replied?

Yes I replied back to give consent to share my information to the US Airforce. Smart responded back within 1 minute to confirm receipt of my consent. So I guess it's just a waiting game until the Airforce facility responds.

Was the facility wanting to contact you the 711th Human Performance Wing at Wright Patterson in Ohio?

I found this link of Airforce STEM fellowships. I'm assuming that one of these would apply depending on your degree level. https://afstem.afciviliancareers.com/in ... ships.html

I received this email as well. Is this independent of SMART, or will the full scholarship and guaranteed employment be provided for those selected for the fellowship as well?

I also got an email from Smart regarding a fellowship offer with the 711th out of Wright Patterson AFB

I emailed them with this question, so maybe they will respond soon.

My guess is that maybe Wright-Patterson selected a group of students for the SMART program and may have not gotten all of their selections funded, and since they receive funding in other programs, they're plugging students into positions of fellowship.

Just a wild guess.

Response to my email from SMART:

"This opportunity is through the Air Force, and is separate from SMART. We do not have the details on it and therefore are unable to answer any questions regarding the process or what is required. After 17 May 2019 when we have received all responses, we will provide your contact information to the Air Force. They will provide details at that time."

I have a different question: Did anyone not receive this email? I'm curious whether it went out to every single SMART reject, or if AFRL are targeting a specific applicant pool. Then again the targeting step might come after SMART has sent the requested information.

Also a question for those who did receive the email: What STEM field are you in? What degree are you pursuing? I am curious again how general or targeted this fellowship opportunity is. In my case, I am pursuing a PhD in Biosciences.

Also, did anyone else who got this email have a phone interview with them during the initial selection process?

I did not have an interview during any part of the SMART process. I'm assuming everyone contacted will get the opportunity-seeing as though they have a few fellowships based on degree level.

Another question - Is anyone from the Ohio area? The facility is in Dayton, so I was wondering if they selected folks nearby. My school is in MD.

I got this e-mail. Did not get an offer from SMART. Pursuing an MS in Biomedical Science.

Were you contacted in regard to the "Operations Research Fellow"?

Yes, the Operations Research Fellow.

@qwerty999: Same. Operations Research Fellow with RHAS. The research description was very vague; the only things I could really parse out of it were "human-machine teams" and "data analysis" of human performance during some kind of training activities, perhaps.

@Chicka: I am in Bloomington, IN, which is about a 3-hour drive from Dayton. Pretty close.

Hi all,

Has anyone else heard back? I received this email too (also 711th Wing) and I’m a neuroscience graduate student. I’m dying to know what this all means!

Thanks,
P

@P: We won't hear anything back until at least after May 17. See comment by Chicka above:

I got this too. Not selected in first round of SMART. Math/Physics Major. Soph. Undergrad. Wright Patterson was top three choice, had an interview with another sponsor who was not in my top three (though I would have taken it gladly).

Would anyone who didn’t get this fellowship opportunity that was a SMART semi finalist mind speaking up? Very curious if they just sent it to everyone, since many of our majors do not align with the goals of the research position.

So far I haven't heard anything back yet. I figure that if they set a May 17 deadline, then that most likely meant by end of day Friday. So I'm hoping that Monday at the earliest we'll get a better idea of what we we're either being offered, interview for, or applying to.

If you haven't checked out the Fellowships for the 711th Human Performance Wing, this link gives information on what they do and can give you some information to decide if the research matches your major. https://www.consortium-research-fellows ... agencyid/2

This is exactly what Pessimistic Me expects. And it kind of makes sense---the information that SMART requested was from us to be able to share with AFRL HPW was very, very basic; if HPW doesn't even have that level of simple information, it seems likely they asked SMART to reach out to all of the rejected semi-finalists, and then HPW will do actual screening once they have the information.
