Smart Interference
Smart Interference
How much does SMART/DOD interfere with your daily life aside of the summer internships (as in during the school year)?
Re: Smart Interference
It barely interferes in negative ways. Basically you need to send you transcript twice a year, file a short annual report every summer, and send a short form requesting your internship. On the positive side it interferes by giving me extra time not looking for internships/future jobs, and once a month I get a payday for doing school work I would have done anyway.Guest67 wrote:How much does SMART/DOD interfere with your daily life aside of the summer internships (as in during the school year)?

The most cumbersome thing you do is fill out the paperwork for your background check. The rest is just as the previous poster said. I was really apprehensive about accepting this scholarship based on things I had read on this forum, but now I believe that those with bad experiences are the minority and the only ones who felt compelled to post. I for one have had a great experience with SMART. I'm currently enjoying my internship. It is true that you may end up doing things in your internship that is unrelated to your field, but it goes you the opportunity to learn more, and you can always leave once your service is up. But there's is nothing that can beat this scholarship! All of my classmates have to work full time or multiple jobs while studying and looking for internships. They're all worried about finding a job when they graduate. Grad school is already stressful enough without having to worry about all those things. SMART eliminates all of that for me
Re: Smart Interference
It's a lot of paperwork initially. Sending in transcripts on time after every semester can be a hassle when your school's registrar office is ridiculously slow, as mine was. But the SMART office has been very cooperative with me on all accounts. They even gave me an extra award payment so I could still pay my rent while waiting for my first paycheck to come in after graduation. They don't hold your hand through the process. They don't annoy you or require you to do anything during the school year, really. Honestly, for the amount of money and opportunity I got out of this program I was expecting to have to do a LOT more with it. Definitely is worth it.
