*** OFFICIAL POST YOUR PAY THREAD ***

Postby Guest324 » Fri Jun 28, 2013 3:27 pm

So much back and forth on this site about pay and what to expect. Post your experiences here and we can actually create a thread that lets people know where they stand paywise compared to other phase II participants and what the Phase I people can expect.

NO PROJECTIONS from Phase I people. Only actual pay.

If you have been working for a couple years, feel free to post where you started and where you are now.

Follow this structure:

$62,400 / year
PHD Industrial Engineering
Army
GS - 11 Step 1
I am furloughed 1 day a week pretty much July through September in 2013

I will be a GS-12 in one year. the first year is considered a probationary period. GS12 step 1 pays $74,500. So my starting pay is really low for a PhD in IE, but at least it ramps up fairly quickly. I realize I said "no projections of pay" but this is a rock hard guarantee in writing on my SF50 (the document you are given when hired, for the Phase I people).

One thing I think people should note is whether these reflect base pay or with locality (which varies quite a bit).

Pay: $48,917 (base), $60,765 (w/ locality)
Degree Level: BS, Computer Science
Branch: Navy
Facility: Omitting
Pay System / Level: Navy Demo, ND-02
Effects of Furloughs: 2 days per pay period (2 weeks) off until Sep. no annual pay increases forecasted.

GS 11 step 2
PhD EE
Army
Furlough: 11 days total

Retention participant. Was promoted to GS 11 two years ago when I got my MS (It took the better part of a year). Received no promotion for the PhD. My supervisor wants to give me GS-12 but HR is blocking it for a year. When I contacted SMART about it they said they are not involved with employment or salaries at SFs.

Pay : $65,000
Degree Level: BA/BS
Branch: USACE
Facility: ERDC
Pay System / Level : Lab Demo /DB2
Effects of Furloughs: I work a 4x10 shift, and the furloughs have caused me to lose 8 hours a week, plus 2 extra hours a week of LWOP.

I have been told that my GS equivalent is "GS-11", but I have never seen anything set in stone. I have 8 years of military experience with 3 years in Iraq and Afghanistan. The only benefit that I get from my military service is 6 hours of leave a pay period, but outside of that it counts for nothing. Since recruited in SMART I have learned that SMART students do not qualify for Long Term Training, Student Loan Repayment Programs, Tuition Assistance or any regular incentive programs; until AFTER they fulfill their SMART commitment. My perspective is that SMART is seen by my facility primarily as a "free labor" program, where they get free internship work, and low cost labor after graduation because of the service commitment. I would NOT recommend SMART to anyone.

I am just entering the SMART program this year as a retention candidate in pursuit of my PhD. My SF shared with me that they bring PhDs onboard as low ND-04s, basically $65K per year. I have worked for the SF for approximately 7 years, and I already earn $83K per year. Basically, many engineers and scientists with Bachelor degrees make as much or even more than those with PhDs in government. I am pursuing the PhD for life after government service.

Pay: about $64,000
Degree Level: Ph.D., Physics
Branch: DoD
Facility: Probably overkill, but leaving this blank due to OPSEC.
Pay System / Level: GG11 step 3
Effects of Furloughs: None

I was hired as a GG11 step 1 in 2014, with the understanding that I was bring hired into a GG13 billet and would be noncompetitively promoted once per year based strictly on my performance. Unfortunately that same year, a major budget crunch hit. After that, "noncompetitive" got reinterpreted by a national-level leadership that watched the Hunger Games and thought it would make a great HR strategy. They instituted tiny promotion quotas and after almost three years I'm still a GG11.

On the other hand, my commitment has expired and frankly the defense contractor job market for STEM types with clearances is so good that essentially by accident I got an offer that doubled my salary. I will thus shortly be leaving government employment. Which I genuinely have mixed feelings about - my SF is an extremely interesting, enjoyable, and (by government standards) caring place to work. If pay had been even remotely competitive with the rest of the market, I'd have probably stayed several more years.

guestagain - Did you start at GS 11 step 6? Or did you work your way up from GS 11 step 1? If you started there, how did you negotiate that?

I did not negotiate. This was the first/only offer I received and it is way better than what I would have gotten on the GS scale (~$49k). My supervisor told me the offer was representative of what he thought I was worth/ my market value based on my resumé. Though I have a feeling most MS grads hired into AFRL probably get the same starting pay as long as they are in a job using Lab Demo (the DR scale/bands). I have no idea though since I don't know anyone else hired in AFRL straight out of grad school. If I remember correctly, my pay is almost within the DR-02 band? Something like that.
