Pushing Graduation Back

Post by Out of Breath »

Has anyone had to extend their award due to not finishing on time? I am rushing like an idiot to finish my dissertation research and I am supposed to graduate this December. How difficult is it? What's the process?

I shortened mine. When I took the scholarship, before getting my first stipend payment, I pushed my anticipated graduation back by about 8 months. In the end, I graduated about 4 months longer than I had very originally intended, but in SMART's eyes, it was a shorter timeframe.

The change was not really difficult at all, as long as your facility is fine with you changing. In fact, before you can even consider changing, you will need to have emails from your facility saying that there will be no problem delaying your hiring date. Make sure you get something from your mentor as well as your SF HR specialist. Your CA can help you compile the necessary documentation.

But if you're planning on finishing in December, you should probably wait until August/September before you make any changes. The last 8 months of my PhD went super fast and it wasn't as hard of a process as I had anticipated it being.
