Scholarship Allocation

Post by monaymonay »

I was just wondering if anyone had advice or experience with taking advantage of existing scholarships they had before SMART? I receive about $11k in scholarship from my school and I wanted to know if anyone found ways to user their grants for things other than tuition, as they'll be useless on tuition with SMART funding.

I think that varies wildly on the terms of the scholarship. If you have scholarship funds deposited into your bank account, you technically have discretion to spend them as you like (supposing the scholarship doesn't seek receipts). If they don't hand you the money, you have to let them know what expenses you would use it for. Perhaps, room and board, rent, groceries, a car loan towards having transportation, existing student loans, textbooks, school supplies, etc. If you can argue that it's an education expense, you have a chance. Some scholarships require it be strictly for tuition though.
I'm a Phase 2 recipient, B.S. in Computer Science, B.S. in Math from Virginia Tech Dec. 2019. I've been with SMART since Spring 2017; Dahlgren is my SF.

Don't walk, run away from SMART (see my first post on this forum).

Depending on how the scholarship is allocated, you can use it for things SMART won't cover. Examples: on campus room/board, study abroad, non-required classes under smart, books, student insurance.
