Postby studyingabroad » Mon Oct 23, 2017 11:50 am

I want to study abroad this Winter. I am going to submit my foreign travel notification form. how do I get SMART to pay for the tuition? I was filling out the service agreement amendment request but I wasn't sure which option to check off

Are you sure tuition is separate from your normal tuition?

Relating to whether or not SMART will cover tuition for any term other than Fall and Spring, here is what the handbook states:

7.5. Tuition and Approved Related Educational Expenses
The SSP funds the total cost of full-time tuition and approved related educational fees during the standard academic year. Full-time tuition includes fall through spring standard terms only. Full time tuition does not include summer or condensed winter terms.

If the tuition payment is additional to what they paid in the Fall then no, SMART will not cover it.

Hi!

I am currently studying abroad, so I think I can answer this! Paying for study abroad usually involves paying the cost through your school, or your school charges for the credit hours they are transferring and adjusts the amount if needed.

So in my case, the study abroad sends an invoice for balance due to the school. The school charges for 15 credit hours, then adds charges to equal the invoice. That total is now what financial aid and everything applies to, and anything after scholarships and grants is sent to SMART for payment.

I read what littlehope said, but I do not actually see anything in the quote stating they would not pay a different amount. Your year to year isn't even the same because you may take 12 or 14 or 16 credits per semester. Nothing in the quote says they will not pay for study abroad, so long as it is "full time tuition" and approved educational fees. Study abroad should be considered an approved educational fee (cost of study abroad).

Hope that helps, it is...not always clean.

I agree with what malarious was saying. What I was more trying to point out was the fact that you want to study abroad for the "Winter". Thus, in the handbook at least, it says they won't cover any Summer or Winter terms that are not during the classic school year. So what I meant by they probably won't cover extra is if the Winter study abroad payment was additional to/separate from what SMART already paid to your school for the classic terms then it probably wouldn't be covered. Where as if they lumped the study abroad sum WITH your Fall or Spring payment like malarious said they did with them then they probably would.

Sorry if that was confusing before. I should have used the word separate rather than additional in my previous post. SMART definitely states somewhere that there is absolutely no cap to HOW MUCH they will pay towards the fall and spring.

Hi guys I just wanted to post an update. I did get my study abroad approved for the winter term. They covered the tuition for it and accepted it since the program does count towards my degree completion. Thanks for you all of your help
