if you got into NREIP but not SMART, the NREIP experience would help you on the next SMART application. you would be able to use references from the SF, and cite any projects that you worked on.
don't forget the Pathways program for students and recent graduates (go to usajobs, and search using "pathways"). use any and all of these options to get experience, and a leg up.
