Along somewhat the same lines as the previous poster, I would like to add that I was duped into a job that did not exist at my facility. I tried to change facilities, did my own leg work, my own interviews, but SMART would not let me transfer. Expect the service liaison and SPO to stick their head in the sand if you even mention it - they have no interest in transfers. I would say the above person's experience was extremely lucky.

I had a problem where the SF said my work would be in a certain subject area that aligned with my graduate work. When I was there for my internship, I found out they weren't completely honest about the work they would have me do. I managed to get a change of SF but only because I was lucky and found a much more aligned job and applied for it around SMART. SMART won't do anything to help facilitate a change of SF. As the others have replied: only sign if you really want to work at the SF you are paired with on paper.

I had the opposite problem. I was assigned to a facility in the north east, but the work wasn't anything I was interested in. Unfortunately I didn't find this out until my first internship. I tried my best to switch facilities and was unable to. Don't sign with SMART unless you are really happy with your placement.

Don't count on it. SMART approving a change in facility is extremely rare.

Make sure you absolutely love your facility before you sign the dotted line and asked all relevant questions about what your job responsibilities will be. They will stick their head in the sand if you come to them and tell them that there is a skills mismatch or you were mislead. They will certainly ignore you if you dislike based on the SF's location -- I believe it says something to that effect in the handbook.

The scholarship is tempting as a student. Do not accept thinking you can change. Plenty on this forum have tried without success. Your experience will likely be no different. Choose wisely.

Switching facilities

Long story short, I completed my site visit. I like it and I love the research and they love my background. Not to fond of the location, the facility is located in. I don't feel it necessary to say the name but its out west and in the middle of nowhere. I prefer to stay in the North East or on the East Coast in general. There is a facility that does sort of the same research. Does SMART allow scholars to transfer facilities? Is there anyway this is possible?
