"9.5.1. Change of Degree Level
A Participant’s change of degree (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.) constitutes a material change of the award and
requires the prior written authorization of the SPO. Such changes are determined on a case-by-case
basis and at the discretion of the SPO and the SF. SFs recommend applicants for SMART awards whose
timelines and degree pursuits match specific workforce needs within the facility. Accordingly, if a
Participant does not obtain the degree funded, it is possible that the SF will not have a post-graduation
employment position for the Participant.
To request a change of degree, a Participant must submit the Degree Level Change Request form
available on the SMART website. The request requires the following:
